At the beginning of the season, East teams will be expected to miss the playoffs, while West teams will be expected to make the playoffs (simple odds). What's even more stupid is all the NHL has to do is move one team (Detroit, Cbus) back to the West to make things even. How a MAJORITY of team owners agreed to this is dumbfounding.
Go Pens (currently 9th in the East) :(Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/09230166715962137802noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8199936405783540709.post-20937022306911914892014-03-16T16:05:18.302-04:002014-03-16T16:05:18.302-04:00Make two more teams then it be even out.Make two more teams then it be even out.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/08799967487912580913noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8199936405783540709.post-33485546535444325372013-09-09T14:10:03.294-04:002013-09-09T14:10:03.294-04:00Thanks for the feedback. In an ideal world though we'd have great balance between the two conferences, but if this were the case the West would benefit from this structural advantage. I think you're onto something with the suggestion that the top 16 teams should make the playoffs. That would be a pretty radical change for the NHL to make, but they seem to like to make changes that bring attention to the league. Maybe some day we'll see that happen.Anonymoushttps://www.blogger.com/profile/06654463214049859090noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8199936405783540709.post-30638916018250383872013-09-06T23:31:36.621-04:002013-09-06T23:31:36.621-04:00Actually, it didn't happen in 11-12 (when the ...Actually, it didn't happen in 11-12 (when the Kings won as the 8 seed in the West) but it did in the two preceding years.

This doesn't take away from your nice statistical analysis, just from the fairness argument. I think the best way to address this is to have the top 16 point total teams make the playoffs. Of course then the unbalanced schedule would come in to play, but it would probably be better.Dodger Doghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17077622288025506363noreply@blogger.comtag:blogger.com,1999:blog-8199936405783540709.post-6130991851058638562013-09-06T23:26:49.435-04:002013-09-06T23:26:49.435-04:00Your Monte Carlo estimation assumes the distributi...Your Monte Carlo estimation assumes the distribution of talent is identical across conferences. But lately the West has been better than the East, as indicated by the fact that each of the last few pre-strike years one or more western conference teams have missed the playoffs with point totals higher than those of Eastern conference teams that got in. If you buy this, then the unfairness is baked in to the current system based on conferences, the question is just how it will be manifest (in unbalanced conferences) or in allocating playoff spots by conference.Dodger Doghttps://www.blogger.com/profile/17077622288025506363noreply@blogger.com
